Young SZC: Branding, Website & Videos

The Challenge

Following the creation of the Team Sizewell C extranet platform, Sizewell C wanted to inspire the next generation about careers in clean energy and sustainability. The goal was to build a youth-focused brand and fully responsive digital platform that would connect with 7–21 year olds, making nuclear energy relevant, accessible and exciting, while encouraging sign-ups to the Young SZC programme.

Cheddar Creative was tasked with creating:

  • Brand identities for the Young SZC master brand and the Power Up and YSZC sub-brands
  • A youth-friendly WordPress website with educational and careers content
  • A suite of video assets to inspire and engage students
  • A content and social media strategy designed specifically for young audiences

Our Approach

Discovery & Research

With permission to deviate from the established Sizewell C brand guidelines, we began with audience research, user personas and competitor benchmarking to understand what would resonate most with students. Moodboards, colour palettes, early Power Up logo concepts and homepage mock-ups were tested in a focus group at Alde Valley Academy in Leiston, where dot voting and in-depth discussion led to us renaming the proposed Power Up mascots “Fizz & Geek” to Fizz & Bolt.

All insights from this session were recorded and captured in a comprehensive discovery document to guide every creative decision moving forward.

Branding & Naming Conventions

The Young SZC brand was designed to flex across audiences:

  • Power Up (7–15 year olds): focused on fun, learning and curiosity.
  • YSZC (16–21 year olds): short for Young SZC but also asking “Why SZC?”, appealing to career-driven students.

Tone of Voice

We developed logos, colour systems and a bold visual style, alongside age-appropriate tones of voice that would speak directly to young audiences in a fresh, engaging way.

Web Design & Content Strategy

The WordPress website offers two programme pathways for Power Up and YSZC, with overlapping content to encourage exploration. Key features include:

  • Light and dark mode for accessibility
  • A learning resource hub for teachers
  • Auto-import of relevant news from sizewellc.com

Our in-house copywriter created tailored content: educational resources for Power Up and careers advice for YSZC, plus The Green Zone – dedicated to sustainability at Sizewell C and green initiatives, such as Wild Aldhurst. The focus group and other user research suggested this type of content was of particular interest to young people.

Video Production

We produced the “Discover Your Future” hero film, shot in local schools and colleges, and at Sizewell C’s apprentice training centre. The video shows how the things students are learning today could lead to future careers in nuclear energy. Shorter edits were created for each age group to maximise outreach and engagement.

The Results

After a soft launch in June 2025, the platform went live in September 2025 to align with the new school year.

The result is a comprehensive brand and digital ecosystem that empowers Sizewell C to connect authentically with young people, teachers and communities – building awareness, sparking curiosity and inspiring the clean energy workforce of tomorrow.
