SZC Harbour Authority: Web Design & Build
A Purpose-Built Website for Marine Safety
We partnered with Sizewell C once again to design and develop a responsive WordPress website for the Sizewell C Harbour Authority (SZCHA) — creating a dedicated, reliable and user-friendly destination for mariners operating around the Sizewell coastline.
The brief
Previously, SZCHA information lived on a single page within the SZC Works Tracker site. As marine activity increased, it became essential to create a standalone platform where mariners could quickly access charts, notices, policies & procedures, safety documentation, as well as register for critical operational updates and apply for dive and marine works permits.
We also needed to give mariners and members of the public information about forthcoming marine works and a way to report any incidents or accidents they might observe pertaining to the SZC harbour area.
Collaborating with the SZCHA project team
Working directly with the SZCHA project team, we mapped out user journeys, content requirements and the most efficient way to deliver essential information. The goal was to reduce friction for mariners, create transparency, and maintain full compliance with Sizewell C’s rigorous digital governance and cybersecurity processes.
Using the established Sizewell C design system
To ensure visual and functional consistency across the wider Sizewell C digital estate, we built the site using the SZC design system that we had previously created and evolved for projects like the Accommodation Finder and Team Sizewell C extranet. This ensured accessibility, clarity and authority — essential qualities for a safety-critical maritime environment.
A clear, focused marine information hub
The new site brings together all operational information mariners and members of the public might need, including:
- Up-to-date navigational & tide charts
- Details of forthcoming marine works
- Policies, procedures and safety notices
- Information about the role and responsibilities of the SZCHA
The site is likely to be accessed “in the field”, so we made sure content would be fully responsive and mobile-friendly, and optimised for fast access, reliability and usability.
Email alerts for notices & policy docs
Similar to the SZC Works Tracker, we built an integrated email notifications system so mariners can register to receive alerts when new documents or notices are published, ensuring they remain informed and compliant.
Secure vessel master training area
A late edition to the project scope, but something we were happy to accommodate; we built a password-protected area where vessel masters can access training materials (a downloadable slide deck) and apply for assessment by the SZC Harbour Master.
A trusted online destination for marine operations
The new SZCHA website delivers a clear, compliant and professional platform tailored specifically to maritime users. As well as aligning this new site seamlessly with the established Sizewell C digital ecosystem, our goal was to enhance communication and support the safety of all marine users in the Sizewell C harbour area. The feedback we’ve received so far from users has been first-rate!
